How To: Exploring .wim files

As [almost] everybody knows, .wim files are in fact backup files for Windows (Windows Imaging Format), managed by the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008.
These files are created when restore points are made by you or any system installing utility, or may come as restore/repair DVDs for your brand (Dell, Fujitsu, etc) computer.

But sometimes is useful just to explore those files and not install them.

The simplest method is to open these files with 7-Zip (4.49 and above).
Just open them as a simple archive files and you can explore and EXTRACT files you want (drivers, tools, etc).

I hope this trick will help you when in need.

How To: Romtelecom and Apple MACs

Dupa cum stiti, Romtelecom s-a autointitulat ISP.
Adica, cica e furnizor de internet.

Bun, de pe vremea liceului, la inceputurile erei Internet-cafe-urilor, cand erau modem-urile alea v56 de mergeau mai prost decat am reusit eu printr-ul telefon SonyEricsson K300 acum vreo 2-3 ani (adica 4-5kBps).

Acum, pe langa abonamentele de internet comune de 2 si 3Mbps, au si de 20 si 30Mbps.

Pentru ultimele abonamente, furnizeaza ca si echipament niste routere Zyxel.
Mufa de Wan, 4 de LAN si wireless.
Atentie, portul 4 de LAN se foloseste pentru IPTV, nu se poate conecta un computer.

Bun, pe langa introducere, se dau datele problemei:

1. Cum se poate conecta un Apple MacBook la acest router?
Simplu, se lasa setarile default in router si se descopera reteaua cu computerul Apple. Se da conectare si se introduce parola routerului.
Implicit, cheia de criptare este WEP.

2. Cum se pot conecta mai multe dispozitive la acest router?
Exemplu: un netbook (instalatorul avea un Asus)
Simplu: la fel ca si la pasul 1, fara prea mari batai de cap.

3. Cum se pot conecta mai multe dispozitive APPLE la acest router?
Simplu: la fel ca si la pasul 1.

Asta in teorie, pentru ca in practica ... nu prea a mers.

Aveam de conectat un Mac obisnuit, un Macbook Air si un iPhone.
Primul mergea fara probleme, al doilea si al treilea nu mergeau de nici un fel.

Dupa ce am reusit sa suparam pe tovarasul instalator, ca "de ce am dat restart la router", dupa ce a semnat ca merge internetul (pe primul mac) si l-am lasat sa plece in treaba lui (desi nu a reusit cu 4 oameni de-ai lui sa rezolve problema), dupa ce in urma cu doua zile mai instalasera un Zyxel si avea aceeasi problema, de fapt, am constatat ca problema este de fapt a computerelor Apple.

Dupa setari si alte setari de nu mai stiam ce am facut, dupa schimbarea canalului, activarea/dezactivarea NAT-ului, filtrarea dupa MAC-urile placilor de retea, dupa ascunderea ID-ului retelei si schimbarea cheii de securitate, dupa ce am reusit sa facem in asa fel incat nu mai merega netul nici pe primul computer, desi routerul afisa mac-urile clientilor conectati, am descoperit unde era problema: dispozitivele cu probleme isi luau ca DNS, chiar IP-ul routerului, sau niste IP-uri care incepeau cu 80.

Dupa ce am introdus manual DNS-urile in setarile de retea ale Macbook Air-ului si iPhone-ului, totul a mers.
DNS-urile Romtelecom sunt:
193.231.100.130
193.231.100.134

DAR, MAI EXISTA O PROBLEMA.
Internetul nu mai merge daca:
- se schimba cheia de criptare din WEP in WPA sau WPA2 (psk sau nu);
- se schimba tipul de wireless de pe mixed, in b/g;
- se ascunde SSID-ul retelei.

Va dati seama ca astia cu Mac-uri sunt nevoiti sa mentina setarile default ale routerului, asa ca sansele ca PC-istii sa gaseasca hotspot-uri prin oras au crescut. :-)

Asta a fost ca si fapt divers.
Nu detin si nu cred ca voi detine (cel putin prea curand, in urmatorii 10 ani) un dispozitiv Apple. Prea mare bataie de cap.

How to repair Windows 7 - the other method

Updated: there were some mistakes in the original post, those errors were corrected and now I've wrote the correct solution.

Well, Bitdefender has done something I didn't expected to do: crash the Windows x64 based computers. Apparently, they forgot to include in one of the software updates, the module which verifies the signature of executable files.
So, as most Bitdefender solutions were updated manually or automatically somewhere on Friday or Saturday (March 19/20, 2010), they began to detect all executable files as a potential virus, although they were reported as "Fake.Virus". As a result, files from Windows, Bitdefender and every other programs accessed in that period of time, were quarantined.

I was surprised to see so many virus alerts on my desktop, and as a desperate measure, I've restarted the computer, because I have personal files I don't want to be infected or deleted/destroyed by the Antivirus. I didn't know at that time what happened and didn't have time to read and comprehend all alert messages, I thought that was a real virus.
Of course, I know what a virus is doing: mostly of them are infecting boot sectors and so the chances to infect other files are very much increased when the Windows is starting up.

Because of this, before I let computer to boot in Windows, I've booted with rescue disks and performed a copy of the operating system, in fact, a copy of the entire system disk with one of the cloning software. You can use Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, etc. to clone your partition or entire disk.

I didn't succeed to perform the cloning with my favorite Acronis True Image (remember, under DOS environment) because my computer was built with recently manufactured components/released technology, so the chipset and components detecting routines weren't able to load the cloning software without locking up the computer.
Was something odd, because hard disk, mouse and keyboard were detected at the boot, but when DOS software was loaded, the computer froze and not responding to input commands. This issue happened with many software under DOS environment, not just Acronis.
But when most software was not working, the file managers worked just fine.
Anyway, more on this particular issue in other posts.

So, after booting in a Mini Windows XP as a live CD, I was able to clone the system disk with Norton Ghost and save the image on a portable USB disk drive.

Now it's time to make some experiments. But first, disconnect from SATA cable the RAID disks I keep for data storage. Now I can play with the OS disk as much as I want.

1. I've tried to boot with Windows 7 disk, go to "Repair computer" and selecting the corresponding option, but when computer booted from hard drive, a black screen with some login related error showed up.

2. I've tried to boot from hard drive with F8 method and select "Repair computer". The same result: no luck.

3. I've tried to boot from hard drive with F8 method and select "Safe Mode". No luck either.

It was something that pissed me off. No chance to recover the OS which contains save games, other personal files, links, shortcuts to various software I use, etc.
I didn't wanted to install Windows again, but in the end, I did it several times.

4. As a desperate measure, I've booted from DVD again, and chose the "Repair your computer" option.

Wait for the "System recovery option" window to scan the partition and see the results.


Select "NO" here and "OK" in the following "Add drivers" window.

This is useful when you want to load SATA, SCASI, RAID, or any other drivers you want.
But in this case, when the "browse" or "open" window is displayed, you can perform the basic actions and the most useful ones: "copy"/"cut"/"paste".
This is a trick which I remember from Windows '98.

Yes, with the help of this window, you can access the disks/partitions - ATA, SATA, USB (last one only in Win 7, maybe in Vista also?) and save the files you want on external devices.

So, with the "open" window, I navigated to the DVD drive (hidden partition was accessible but I didn't want to lose any more time), and copied the System32 folder, into the "Windows" folder from the hard drive.

After selecting "yes" when it's prompting to merge the local folder with the one from DVD, THE REPAIR IS FINALLY DONE!

At most, I was able to boot from hard drive, and now, the login screen is displayed, with my account in middle. Of course, nothing is too easy, so when I clicked the account picture, it was saying an "incorrect password" message.
This was another thing that pissed me: I didn't had a password for this account.

The restart buttons were not working either, so I've performed a cold restart.
After POST, selected the "Safe Mode" (F8).

The login screen is displayed again, and when I clicked the account picture, surprise: login successful and desktop is shown with all icons and files and etc.

Went to "Control Panel", then "User accounts", "Manage account" and created a password for my account, which was the only one by the way, with admin rights.

After this, I've applied the Bitdefender patch to solve the fake virus alert.
Restarted the computer (warm reset this time ), booted normally, and inserting the password when prompted in login screen.

WOW, that was the longest recovery ever and the trickiest one.
Finally, I am playing games and surfing the web.

Later: but, after patching and updating Bitdefender, I managed to activate the Parental Control and some alerts screens were displayed notifying me that some sites were block. Even after I deactivated the Parental control, I was unable to connect to those sites anymore.

Long story short: uninstalled Bitdefender (no sites connection), live assistance from Bitdefender without luck, installed again, Parental Control deactivated (still no sites connection), requesting live assistance from BD (still no sites), booted with XP live CD, installing the OS image, same issue with login screen, went in Safe Mode, User accounts, Create password, restart, boot, click on account picture, "incorrect password" message is shown, WTF!!!???? I had already created a password, are you nuts?, restarted, went in Safe Mode, User accounts, create another password, create another user account with its password, reset, booted, same "incorrect password message" with every account/password, WWWWWTTTTTFFFFF?????????

And now I have installed the OS image the third time (around 3:30 AM with a couple of sleep session before and after that).
I hope to recover the OS this evening and not touching the f*****g Parental Control again.
Let's pray toghether for this.

After 3 more image recovery, I managed to remember where I was wrong and: I forgot to update Bitdefender after initial System32 recovery.
Now, after patching, all is working fine.

Firefox vs Internet Explorer

These print screens are explaining how Firefox and internet Explorer are rendering this blog that you are browsing now.

As you can easily see, many elements of the blog are incorrectly shown by the IE, because it doesn't have implemented some features.
Using Blogger / Google hosting services, many rules of the web pages creation/structure cannot be used.
Because the blog uses the Picasa service for image hosting, the pages rendering is slow and it's consuming very much bandwidth.
For some protection/privacy reasons, I am not linking some of the pictures, but instead I am transforming them in base64 code and inserting into the web page itself html/xml code, in this manner I am bypassing images hosting issues.
But only Firefox knows about this trick. IE is not able to display base64 images inside of the web page code.

These are the reasons why the same blog / page is shown differently on those two browsers.

1: header picture has some transparency fading layers. Only Firefox can display them;

2: searchbox is not so special. It's a simple form code with display:inline style;

3: widgets and labels are having an icon embedded as base64 pictures. Only Firefox can display them;

4: elements highlight is performed only by Firefox, although both methods for IE were used (html and plugin:dxTransform) but none of them seems to work;

5: also, another base64 image inserted in the lytebox script to be displayed when the image is loaded by the script.

... much other pictures inside the code are not displayed, class pictures, round corners for comments... etc.
I'll let you find out by yourself which elements are not displayed.


Personally, I am using IE only to download the Firefox on a fresh Windows XP installation.

Tested:
Firefox: 2.x, 3.0.x, 3.5
IE: 6, 7

Let's hope that IE 8 is better.

How to - create a right click shell command in explorer

For many times I wanted to have available a simpler method to manage certain files within explorer interface (we are discussing about Windows XP, but should work also in Vista).

For example the ".001" files and so on, related to old WinRAR archives.
First you should right click on the ".001" file, choose "open with..." and select "WinRAR" from your available executables. Now, you can OPEN ONLY the .001 files which should relate themselves to the other .002, .003, ... files and the rar interface is opened.

From that interface, you can choose the "extract" command, or simply drag&drop your files outside of the rar window, in whichever folder you want.

So, this is not a simple and fast solution, isn't it? Because you have to do it each time for every split archive.

A much convenient solution is to create only once a command and select that command for the archive you want by choosing it from a shell menu (right click).

First, we have to create the registry entries: manually, or creating a .reg file in which we put the commands.
You might say that it's the same, with both methods, but you can save the .reg file and use it every time you re-install the operating system, so you don't have to remember so much details. Or, create one .reg file for each command you like.

STEP 1
Create a text file somewhere. Choose a descriptive file name for it. Work only with Notepad or another simple text editor (Microsoft Office Word is not good for this and not even Wordpad).

HOW TO:
- right click on your desktop, choose "NEW" and then "text document";
- rename "New Text Document.txt" in "extract with rar.txt"

We will keep for the moment the extension .txt in order to work faster.

- open the "extract with rar.txt" file by double click on it

STEP 2
Paste in your .txt file the following text:

STEP 3 Modify the path to the Winrar executable as it is available on your system. Please note that the backslash "\" characters form the path must be double.

STEP 4 Save the .txt file by "Ctrl + S" keyboard command or by "File" -> "Save" menu option.

STEP 5
Rename the .txt file in .reg file.
Right click on the "extract with rar.txt" file, choose "rename" and change the "txt" extension into "reg".

STEP 6
Depending on how is set your operating system (again, we are talking about Windows XP), double click on the .reg file and select "open" or right click on it and select "merge".

Select "YES" on the warning texts and that's it!
The "EXTRACT with WinRAR" command is now available when you right click on an old split winrar archive.
And also for every other type of files, but it will not work for them.

Now, when you have a split archive which begins with .001 for the firs part of it, you can simply right click on this first file of the archive and select the "EXTRACT with WinRAR" command from the shell menu.

Subtitles in Media Player Classic

Media Player Classic is a better player than you might think. I actually use this player for all cinema/tv movies, even for high definition.

This little player (along with required codecs) can show subtitles, without the need of the Vobsub tool from many not-so-liked codec packs.
If the movie subtitle file has the name exactly as the movie file, the MPC will show it instantly (when View -> Options -> Playback -> auto load subtitles is checked). If not, simply drag the subtitle file over the already opened movie and the player will read the text file (.srt, .sub, txt, etc.).

If none of these methods are not working, be sure the MPC has the following setting: View -> Options -> Playback -> Output -> DirectShow Video -> VMR7 or VMR9 renderless.

But when you don't have the movie subtitle? You have to search for it on specific sites, and this you have to do it for many sites, especially for a new released movie.

Another method is to use the MPC, putting to look for the subtitle itself.
When the movie is playing, go to File -> Subtitle Database -> Download -> select your desired language -> download and open. The MPC will search for your movie subtitle. Remember, the "Download" option is not available when the movie window is not opened (or when the required codec is not present in the system).

How its doing that? Very simple: every movie has an identification number (hash) which is connected to a subtitle file.

When no subtitle is available for your movie, you can search with File -> Subtitle Database -> Search or how you normally do on your favorite subtitle sites.
The MPC subs are located on the www.opensubtitles.org. You can setup another location in View -> Options -> Subtitles -> Database.

If you found the subtitle on another website and want to help other users, you can also upload the subtitle so the others can find it quickly. But I recommend not to use File -> Subtitle Database -> Upload (you may be doing something wrong), instead use the SubDownloader software. More info here and here.

HDR pictures

First of all, I am not a photographer, nor related to the professional photography, nor even having a digital camera.

I've seen lots of photos in my life. Surfing the web, I even discovered several techniques to improve the visual impact of a photo. Visual impact doesn't mean only to boost the contrast of picture's color, but to send a much "visible" message to the viewer.

Since I am not professionally related to the image processing and not even owning a digital camera, I am more than a stranger to the daily tasks that an amateur to a professionally photographer is currently performing when is processing images.

But sometimes, I was questioning myself if it is possible to get from a picture more than we currently see in it. Some of the photos I've seen were good (as far as I can tell as a common viewer) and most of them were bad: not having the proper exposure, lot of blurring due to the lack of a tripod or anything to keep the camera still, vignetting, noise and other image flaws.

Sometimes I was picturing in my mind that someone could have better results if he will use the same picture, but taken in different conditions: under or overexposed, in order to get the picture to the same visual level as a human eye can do it.

Of course this is not possible with the current cameras in one shot only, but we can make the picture in 3 different exposures: under, normal and overexposed. Then, from each of these, we will extract the details we need.

Today I've found that there is such a technique, and is used to make HDR pictures (highdynamicrange).

There is nothing to not like them.

And those picture were made with the same technique I've just dreamed of: taking the same picture with 3 different exposures, and then combining into a image processing software as Photoshop or Photomatix.

During normal operation or in Safe mode, your computer may play "Fur Elise" or "It's a Small, Small World" seemingly at random. Cum se poate măsura înălţimea unei clădiri cu un barometru?

Primul raspuns al studentului:
Se măsoară lungimea barometrului, se leagă barometrul cu o sfoară şi se coboară de pe acoperişul clădirii;

Înălţimea clădirii = lungimea barometrului + lungimea sforii.

Studentul a fost dat afară de la examen.
Studentul a făcut contestaţie, care a fost acceptată pentru că s-a considerat că întrebarea nu impunea o anumita soluţie. Dar cum răspunsul său nu putea edifica examinatorul asupra cunoştinţelor de fizică dobândite la cursul respectiv, o noua examinare a avut loc.

Răspunsul 2 al studentului:
Se aruncă barometrul de pe clădire şi se măsoară timpul până la impactul cu solul.
Înălţimea clădirii = ( g * t^2 )/2

Examinatorul solicită o altă soluţie.

Răspunsul 3 al studentului:
Dacă este o zi însorită, se aşează barometru pe clădire şi se măsoară umbra de pe sol.
Cunoscând lungimea barometrului şi a umbrei, totul se reduce la o simplă problemă de asemănare a triunghiurilor.

Soluţia pe care o aşteptaţi de la mine bănuiesc că este măsurarea presiunii la sol şi pe clădire - presiune care variază cu înălţimea - şi determinarea înălţimii clădirii, în funcţie de variaţia de presiune. Dar aceasta este o soluţie de-a dreptul plicticoasă, de aceea va mai propun una.

Script pentru inserarea de emoticoane in posturile Blogger

While searching for some Firefox extensions through the web, I've found an interesting and useful script which can help to insert emoticons in Blogger posts.

This script must be installed through the Greasemonkey extension and it works only when the Blogger post interface is in "Compose" mode, not "edit HTML".

It simply allows you to insert any image in your posts, from the Yahoo! and MSN emoticos, to animated gifs or any picture format.

27-11-2007: all Yahoo! emoticons (normal and hidden ones) are available in the script

Tot cautat pe net dupa scripturi si extensii de Firefox, am dat peste un script interesant. Se instaleaza in extensia GreaseMonkey si permite inserarea de emoticoane in posturile Blogger.

Aceste emoticoane pot fi orice imagine: emoticoane Yahoo!, MSN sau pur si simplu de la gif-uri animate pana la orice alt format de imagine.

Scriptul l-am modificat dupa nevoile proprii, astfel ca la data de 27-Noiembrie-2007 el contine toate emoticoanele Yahoo! (normale + cele ascunse).

De altfel, scriptul se poate modifica de oricine, in Notepad, pentru adaugarea oricaror emoticoane sau imagini.

Hack in Windows

Acum cativa ani aflasem o chestie draguta despre virusi si automat si despre antivirusi.
Exista o insiruire de caractere pe care le poti scrie intr-un simplu fisier text, iar in momentul in care salvezi fisierul, antivirusul va afisa un mesaj de alerta.

Tin sa precizez urmatoarele lucruri:
1. fisierul creat astfel NU ESTE VIRUS. El arata niste caractere care par a fii instructiuni ale unui virus, dar nu sunt.
2. acest fisier se foloseste ca o metoda de test a antivirusuilui, pentru a vedea daca este vigilent sau nu.
3. in functie de antivirusul testat astfel, se pot vedea urmatoarele rezultate:
a) antivirus prost / setat prost = nu va afisa nici un mesaj de alerta
b) antivirus prost / setat pe high scan sau
antivirus bun / setat prost = mesajul de alerta va spune faptul ca fisierul creat este un virus (desi nu este) si va incerca sa ii aplice una din metodele de curatat

c) antivirus bun / setat bine si updatat = va afisa mesajul (corect de altfel) cum ca fisierul este suspect, ii va afisa numele intruziunii si textul "NOT A VIRUS".

Pentru a vedea daca functioneaza sau nu, procedati in felul urmator:

1. creati un fisier text (pe desktop, clic dreapta si alegeti "NEW" - > "Text document")
2. deschideti fisierul text si dati copy/paste la urmatoarele caractere:
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

3. salvati fisierul (din meniul File alegeti Save file / sau Control + S in fisier)

In momentul in care fisierul este salvat, antivirusul ar trebui sa va afiseze un mesaj de avertizare.

Acest fisier de test se numeste EICAR TEST FILE (de la European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research

Bun, pentru cei care au avut rabdare, mai am o chestie interesanta.
Se pare ca un anume tip, a descoperit o vulnerabilitate in faimosul Internet Explorer (apropo, nu am mila de cei care il folosesc ), astfel incat se poate ajunge la crash chiar in 6 cuvinte.

De curiozitate, cautati pe net "crash IE in six words" si vedeti rezultatele.

Adica: deschideti Internet Explorer (nu Firefox, nu Opera) si trimiteti-l la urmatoarea adresa http://hamachiya.com/junk/ie_crash.html.

Daca nu va crasheaza instant, dati New Tab.

O chestie si mai interesanta pe care am descoperit-o experimentand cele de mai devreme, cititi in continuare:

- se stie faptul ca Microsoft's Explorer este foarte inrudit cu Internet Explorer.
Fiecare dintre ele poate deschide anumite adrese ale celuilalt.
IE poate vedea directorele de pe hard, iar Explorerul (pentru cei novici in calculatoare, este acelasi lucru cu fereastra care se deschide pe My Computer ) poate afisa pagini web.

-bun, toate acestea fiind zise, procedam asemanator ca si mai sus:
1. cream un fisier text (cu extensia .txt, nu doc sau alte prostii)
2. scriem in el urmatoarele caractere: <style>@;/*
3. incercam sa salvam fisierul (File - Save sau Control + S)

Aici nu mai pot sa explic rezultatele, pentru ca inca mai studiez problema.

VirusScan Enterprise de la Network Associates, Inc. va afisa mesajul de alerta:
"VirusScan Alert!
Detected as: Exploit-InvCSS".

Pe de alta parte, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 10 nu va afisa nimic. Nici la salvarea fisierului si nici cand este scanat explicit.

Reclamatia unui automobilist surprins de radar cu 250 km/h pe o portiune de sosea cu viteza limitata la 70.

"Onorata Curte, intr-adevar, am vazut semnul de circulatie de "70", scris cu negru pe fond alb si incadrat intr-un cerc rosu, pe un panou fara nici o alta indicatie de unitati de masura. Eu nu pot sa-mi imaginez nici o clipa ca Ministerul de Interne nu ar aplica Legile Republicii. Prin urmare, 70 metri/secunda corespund exact unor 252 kilometri/ora.
Politistii au afirmat ca eu am fost cronometrat cu 250 km/h, lucru pe care eu nu-l contest. Ma aflam, deci, cu 2 km/h dedesubtul limitei autorizate de viteza.

Va rog sa luati nota, sa-mi restituiti permisul de conducere si sa-mi permiteti sa ma retrag. Am onoarea sa va salut."
